Visiting the UK
Citizens of the EU, and EEA are not required to obtain a visa when visiting the UK for a period of up to 6 months. However, individuals seeking to enter the UK for purposes such as work, or study must apply for entry clearance in advance.
It is important to review the visitor immigration rules to ensure compliance before traveling to the UK as a visitor.
Getting Married
To visit the UK for the purpose of getting married or registering a civil partnership, it is necessary to apply for a Marriage Visitor visa.
If you or your family members are citizens of the EU, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, or Liechtenstein, you may also be required to apply for a Marriage Visitor visa if you intend to visit the UK for the purpose of getting married or registering a civil partnership.
Crossing the UK border
For those holding passports from Australia, Canada, Japan, New Zealand, the United States of America, Singapore, and South Korea, equipped with a biometric chip, you can utilize the ePassport gates upon arrival to pass through the border.
Additionally, citizens of the EU, EEA, and Switzerland may also use the ePassport gates, with ongoing evaluation of this privilege.
Please note that as of October 1, 2021, individuals will not be permitted to enter the UK using an EU, EEA, or Swiss national ID card unless they meet the following criteria:
- Hold settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme
- Have applied to the EU Settlement Scheme by June 30, 2021, but are awaiting a decision
- Possess an EU Settlement Scheme family permit
- Hold a frontier worker permit
- Are a Swiss national with a Service Provider from Switzerland visa
If you fall under any of the above categories, you may continue to use your national ID card to enter the UK until at least December 31, 2025.
Proving Immigration Status in the UK
European Union (EU), European Economic Area (EEA), and Swiss citizens are encouraged to utilise the online service to access and verify their immigration status, as well as to provide proof of their status when necessary.
For detailed instructions on how to view and authenticate your immigration status, as well as how to update your personal information, please refer to the provided guide on Gov.uk website.
Employers can find guidance on this website on how to conduct right to work checks for EU citizens and their family members residing in the United Kingdom.
Non-EU citizens
Non-EU citizens can provide a physical document as proof of their immigration status.
Individuals holding a valid Biometric Residence Permit, Biometric Residence Card, or status granted under the EU Settlement Scheme can also verify their rights through an online service.
Employers can access guidance on how to conduct either a physical document check or an online check to verify an individual's immigration status.
