Proving your identity and supporting documents
As a requirement for your application, you must verify your identity. The method for doing so varies depending on your country of origin and the type of passport you hold.
There are two options available to you:
- Visit a visa application center to have your fingerprints and photograph taken in order to obtain a biometric residence permit.
- Utilise the 'UK Immigration: ID Check' app to scan your identity document and either create or log into your UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) account.
Upon applying, you will receive detailed instructions on the necessary steps to take.
In the event that an appointment is required, please be aware that the visa application center may need to retain your passport and documents for processing.
Additionally, you may be required to travel to the nearest visa application center, which could potentially be located in another country.

How long it takes to get a decision
After submitting your application online, verifying your identity, and providing all necessary documents, you can typically expect a decision within 3 weeks.
If there are any delays in processing your application, you will be notified promptly.
This may occur if additional time is needed to verify your supporting documents, if an interview is required, or if your personal circumstances, such as a criminal conviction, need to be further assessed.
For those seeking a quicker decision, expedited processing options may be available for an additional fee.
After you apply
If you wish to cancel your application, please submit a request. A refund of your fee will only be issued if UKVI has not yet commenced processing your application.
Upon cancellation, you will receive an email notifying you of the decision on your application. This email will provide detailed instructions on the next steps to be taken.
If you have a child while you’re in the UK
Having a child while in the UK does not automatically grant them British citizenship.
To travel in and out of the UK with your child, you must apply online for their dependant visa.
In order to apply, you will need to provide a full UK birth certificate for each child, which must include the names of both parents. This documentation is necessary to ensure smooth travel arrangements for you and your child.
